Common water problems in western PA and Eastern Ohio
Hardness:
Water does not make suds and forms a white crust around faucets.
EPA Standards
Less than 1.0…Soft
1.0 - 3.5…Slightly Hard
3.5 - 7.0…Moderately Hard
7.0 - 10.5…Hard
10.5 and up…Very Hard
Iron:
Water turns yellow or leaves orange stains on fixtures
EPA standard on iron is 0.3 ppm
PH:
Acid on alkaline in water. Treatment on other forms such as hardness, iron etc. will depend on the PH level of the water.
Total Dissolved Solids:
Dissolved metals and minerals in the water combine to make TDS count. EPA recommend that a count of over 500 ppm be treated before drinking use.
Sulphur:
"Rotten Egg" odor that causes an objectionable taste and odor in water.
Bacteria:
Each water source should be tested once a year for coliform and fecal bacteria. All new wells should be checked after running at least a couple of thousand gallons through the new water lines.
These are the most common problems, but we treat each water system on an individual basis. Numerous tests are available depending on conditions.
